QD-OLED: Samsung also fixes the second major problem

A new display coating reduces light reflections on new QD-OLED monitors. This should make them appear less grayish-violet.

Samsung Display is giving new QD-OLED monitors an improved display coating. According to the manufacturer, this reduces light reflections by 20 percent, thus fixing a problem with previous QD-OLED models: strong light incidence previously brightened the entire display, making black appear grayish-violet instead of the deep, rich black typical of OLEDs.

This distortion occurs because QD-OLED displays do not have the otherwise usual polarization filter. This allows Samsung to increase brightness, as the filter would also absorb light from the organic LEDs behind it. However, ambient light also reaches the reflective backplane of the OLED and is reflected there, causing the entire screen area to brighten in a bright environment.

Samsung promises “deep black in any environment” with the new coating in its announcement. All new QD-OLED monitors released from 2026 onwards will feature the improved coating. Samsung calls it QuantumBlack. Monitor manufacturers give the coating their marketing names, such as Asus Black Shield, Gigabyte Obsidian Shield, and MSI Dark Armor.

The 2026 generation thus comes with two major advancements: a classic subpixel arrangement with RGB stripes, which reduces color fringing, and richer black.

The coating also brings another advantage: According to Samsung, the surface hardness increases from 2H to 3H on the pencil hardness scale. The protective film is therefore said to be hard enough to prevent scratches from fingernails.

QD-OLED displays were previously considered particularly sensitive when cleaning. In the best-case scenario, the new coating won't smudge as quickly; however, this remains to be seen.
